What Do I Bring to Nursing??? (PERSONALITY BLOG)-10/12/12

After taking the personality test, I have noticed a few strengths and weaknesses that could assist me in my profession. As a “BLUE” personality my needs are to be understood and appreciated. These aspects of my personality are my weaknesses because I will not be understood or accepted by every patient I meet. I am able to turn the awareness of this weakness to a benefit of mine in trying to make sure that every patient feels understood and accepted no matter what their condition might be. As an individual, strengths in my personality are wanting autonomy, stable, sincere, high achiever, deep sense of purpose, and I am able to enjoy conversation and give it time. I am able to be independent in nursing when other team members are busy, meaning I can take care of the patients I have with minimal help and I am able to allow the patient to converse their feelings for as much time as they need without feeling impatient. For goal oriented personality I am receptive to others suggestions and plan well and follow through. Nursing has a lot of changes that occur on the job daily. If I plan the whole day out, I am sure that it will not plan out the way that I wanted it to. I am able to adjust easily and be flexible with my job. For nursing, I am respectful of the employer because of the employer’s position whether it be lower or higher than my position.

Weaknesses in my personality can be highly emotional, over discuss issues, and expect others to read my mind. All of these weaknesses that I am aware of can be changed into my strengths. Being highly emotional as a nurse will only make my job more stressful. I am going to have to not take things personally and take things for what they are. I should not discuss issues too long when the patient does not want to, so in these cases, I would assess the patient and see where their patience level is and how much information they are comprehending. As a nurse, I can never expect people to read my mind. No one knows what I am thinking so it is important to explain in clear terms to the patient what I mean when saying something as simple as “Can I take your blood pressure?”

Personal experiences throughout my life have taught me lessons to be respectful, do not judge people and be able to use the resources available to the best of my ability. School experiences have taught me to listen clearly to what people are saying, everyone is a unique individual, explain medical terminology to patients in terms that are simple and easy to understand and to respect cultural differences. Professional experiences have taught me that not everyone is going to like you or be nice to you at every single moment in your life. Learn to deal and cope with hardships and do not take things personally. All people make mistakes. In nursing, it is critical to prevent every mistake possible but we are only human beings. It happens, but we should do our best to prevent anything bad from happening. Treat the patient as if they were our own family member. Also, teamwork is essential for nursing. We must work together to provide the best care possible for the patients.
