Final QSEN Essay: Informatics (Fall 2014)

Attitude In Informatics

Informatics in nursing provides a way for individuals to document accurately, faster, and safely (American Dental Education Association (ADEA), 2012). I have chosen to reflect on one of the attitude competencies of informatics that states to “appreciate the necessity for all health professionals to seek lifelong, continuous learning of information technology skills” (QSEN Institute, 2014). Informatics provides an environment that allows for less patient errors because notes are legible, there is bar coding, and systems are recent, making communication amongst professionals quicker; meaning better decision making regarding patients (ADEA, 2012). Professionals need to be grateful for the technological systems available in healthcare because this creates an environment that allows for enhanced patient care.

My clinical experience at the Salinas City Elementary School District has helped me achieve the need to be thankful for informatics because I learned about an informatics system called PowerSchool. I learned I will always be adapting to informatics systems and appreciate this opportunity. I chose the attitude above because I believe that without an informatics system, the district nurse would not be organized. Technology and documenting in the system saves her time and she is able to focus on the students which is why I value informatics.

The readings and discussions have helped me reach the attitude competency because we have discussed our informatics skills, the benefits of patient safety, informatics errors, prevention informatics, bar coding, and the benefits and consequences of learning multiple informatics systems. Readings have achieved the attitude by informing me about why informatics is important, describing informatics competencies, and the growing technological environment (Hebda & Calderone, 2010, pp. 56-59). The coursework has opened my eyes to the never ending world of informatics, which is why I have learned to be grateful for the continuous need of informatics skills.

I feel up to date with informatics through the readings, discussions, and the clinical rotation and have achieved the attitude competency by learning about the expanding environment of informatics as a life long journey in my nursing career. Systems are always going to be changing, I will always be learning documentation, and this lifelong process allows me, and other professionals, to adapt to the culture of the upcoming environment. By learning about informatics and achieving the attitude competency, I can become familiar with many systems in order to communicate better with other health care professionals and patients.
